On Friday we announced that our gear is now being distributed to bike shops here in the US through our partnership with BTI. To kick things off we are throwing a little promotion for the month of February. Any bike shop that purchases Fyxation components through BTI will be entered into a drawing to win up to $300 worth of free Fyxation gear. First prize is $300 worth of free gear and we’ll be giving out three additional prizes worth $100 each.

While this contest only applies to bikes shops in the US, you can help support your local shop by purchasing Fyxation gear or placing a special order for any of our gear throughout the month of February. Once that order is placed, your buddies at your local shop will be entered to win. Maybe if they win you can hit them up for some of the loot!

Fyxation Partners With BTI

We don’t really have a “press release” section of our website but we wanted to share a release that went out this morning. All our gear is now in stock at BTI! BTI is the US distributor for great brands like Charge Bikes, Halo and Cinelli. We’re in good company.

White Road Invests in Public Bikes

To an outsider our blog posts must look like a random series of unrelated stories but there’s always some method to our madness. This post is no different.

I was just reading on the BRaIN website (Bicycle Retailer or http://www.bicyclretailer.com) that Clif Bar founder Gary Erickson’s venture capital fund made an investment in Public Bikes, gaining a minority interest in the company. We’ve written about Public Bikes before and think they have a pretty cool brand, product and are positioned in a growing segment of the bike market. Obviously the guys at White Road felt the same way.

According to BRaIN, White Road also owns a stake in Santa Cruz Bicycles. I’m not saying we’re looking, but if the guys at White Road see this pop up on their Google Alerts, feel free to check out our site.

14 Bike Co Online Bike Builder

Just saw this over at Pedal Consumption. 14 Bike Co. in London just launched a pretty slick online bicycle builder and to kick things off they’re throwing a pretty cool contest where you can win a free bike. Check out more details here at their facebook page. Must have cost a few Quid to get this up and running. This is one of the nicest online bike builders that I’ve seen.

For those not familiar, 14 Bike Co. is a bike shop in the Brick Lane neighborhood in London. They stock a lot of great brands with the exception of our favorite brand – Fyxation. They also sell their own house brand of 14 Bike Co frames and forks. We’re especially fond of the 14 Bike Co ESB which is a tig welded trick frame which is actually designed and built in the UK. Urban Cycling Book

Katie King Rumford put together a terrific book on urban cycling and posted it for us all to enjoy on Issuu. Her images, facts and content are inspirational and fun to read. The book covers everything from the history of the bicycle to bicycle advocacy. I particularly like the section (their)Story, where different riders discuss everything from why they ride to the fear they feel getting on the saddle in an urban environment. COG Mag: Exhibit at Chrome Chicago

January 19th COG Magazine and Chrome Bags are throwing a Gallery Exhibit featuring some of COG’s best work at Chrome’s downtown Chicago location. The exhibit and party were put together in part to introduce Chrome’s All City Sneaker collaboration with COG Mag. No cover, live music, drinks and a COG Mag photo exhibit; can’t think of a reason not to go. Just might have to pick up a set of COG Southside sneakers too!

Rodeo Pursuit Bullhorn Bar – Saddle Up!

When we were at Interbike this year we previewed 5 new handlebars that were going to be part of our 2012 line up. Of all the bars we introduced the Rodeo Pursuit Bullhorn bars were the biggest hit. Unlike a traditional bullhorn handlebar, our Rodeo Pursuit offers a subtle 40mm drop before the bar flares up. The added length and additional bends make this a super versatile bar that is as much designed for upright riding as it is for sprints. State Bicycle – Austin Fixed Gear

We signed up as sponsors for the latest Loops event hosted by State Bike Co. State Bicycle Co. is throwing a Loops ride in a bunch of cities this year with the goal being to promote their brand but also to help raise money for the local cycling clubs in these cities. If you’re not familiar with State Bicycle they are a young but growing company that focuses on affordable fixed gear bikes that can be ordered online and now through some shops. While browsing Cycle Exif today I was stopped by these images of summer. Maybe it’s the fresh snow on the ground or the 19 degree weather, but this collaboration from Linus Bikes and Almond Surf Boards just makes made me reminisce about a warm summer day. Linus is well known for its afforadable line of city bikes and commuter bikes with simple lines and a classic look. They pair nicely with Almonds classic shapes.

Chrome Bag Store – Chicago

Just before Christmas I headed to Chicago for the day to visit shops and my little bro. I spent quite a bit of time riding around the Wicker Park neighborhood. This area has a great vibe and is loaded with coffee shops, great eats, and some of Chicago’s best shops like Rapid Transit and Copenhagen Cyclery; right in the middle of it all is the Chrome Bag store. Chrome’s Chicago location has a mellow vibe and calming layout, and its really impressive to see their entire collection in one place. From shoes and apparel to messenger bags and roll tops, this store is packed with goodies.

I was lucky and hit a lull between holiday shoppers and Andrea was nice enough to show me around. One of the most impressive spots in the place is their custom bag design center. Not only can you pick through fabrics, color layouts, patches and customer samples, they actually make the bags right there in house! While not sewing daily, they have pro in house that stitches up custom orders weekly. As if that wasn’t enough, Thursdays after hours they have a store party with music and other collaborations. Definitely a must see if you’re in the windy city.

Public Bikes – European Inspired Bikes

On a recent trip to San Francisco we spent an evening having drinks at 16th and Valencia in The Mission. While our primary goal was to imbibe, we were able to spend a lot of time checking out people going about their business on their bicycles. One of the things we noticed was there were a number of people riding nice looking bikes from a company called Public Bikes. Public Bikes is based in San Francisco and are known for European-inspired bikes or Dutch bikes that you see all over Europe. Upon further review, Public Bikes offers a complete line of bikes geared towards people that like to ride through town on a comfortable bike and are more interested in the journey than getting their on time.

They offer two different models of bikes – the Standard and the Classic with each model offering a Sloped Diamond Frame version and a Step Through version. Their bikes come in a number of different colors and you can configure your bike based on your height, color preference and even what additional accessories you want to add. They offer a full line of accessories including helmets form Nutcase and Bern, lights from Knog and PDW, and a mix of racks, bells and other items.

State Bicycle Co. Loops Tour

Over the last year we’ve had the opportunity to work with the guys at State Bicycle Co. a bit (we’ve actually been bugging them to carry our gear but we’ll save that for another post) and we are very impressed with their company, product and the things they are doing in the cycling community. This year they are taking their local Loops rides nationwide and have an 11 city tour planned. Starting in Austin in January, the Loops Tour will visit both coasts and many points in between. Keep an eye on the State Bicycle Co (http://www.statebicycle.com) website and Facebook page for updates and to see if the State Bicycle Co Loops series is coming to a city near you.

Biking Can Save Us

We all know that there are benefits to cycling; it saves money, reduces pollution and just makes you feel good. Fastcodesign.com took what is intuitive to cyclists and broke it down graphically. This is a great reminder of why it is better to pedal than to drive and just what a positive difference even a short ride or commute can make in your day. Bicycle commuting is getting better in a lot of places; Chicago is investing in protected bike lanes, Minneapolis has extensive commuting infrastructure, and Portland believes that they will save 400 million in health care costs by 2040 through increased ridership. Skeletons NYC

How often are you making your way around town and you see the skeleton of a bike locked to parking meter or bike rack, and wonder “how did that happen?” As a cyclist you can’t pass this scene and not pause for the loss of someone’s bike. I know when we were in Philly recently, the scene was all too common, and I took pity on some of these remains with my own photos. Marko Vuorinen has taken to documenting these sad scenes even further, and published them on skeletonsnyc.com. There is a melancholy feeling, yet strange peace, in his photos of these bike skeletons in NYC.

Don’t Get Racked

So, you’re returning from an epic ride–you open you’re garage door, and SMASH! Whether you blame your state of exhaustion or endorphin buzz you know you just got racked, and caused a whole lot of damage to your bike, probably your car and definitively you’re garage. Ok, while I’ve never done this (knock on wood), I have plenty of friends who have, including a neighbor that recently turned a Thule Cargo Box into fiberglass shrapnel.

Heads Up System offers a system to remind you when you are returning home with gear on your rack. Place a transponder on your bike or kayak and when you approach you’re garage you get an audible reminder in the car and a visual LED alert inside the garage. This system is pretty slick and much cheaper than the deductible from your insurance company– and far better than the crap your friends will give you for smashing your ride. Detroit Bicycle Company – Motor City Fixed

When we were at Interbike this year the guys from Detroit Bicycle Company came by our booth. We had never heard of them before and were interested in their story. They are based in Detroit, a city that’s been pretty hammered by the economy. The Fyxation brothers are originally from the Detroit area so we’re stoked to see what they’re doing. Rather than following the model that’s all the rage these days – super cheap fixed gear completes made out in China – the guys at Detroit Bicycle Company are building custom fixed gear bikes and according to their site the frames are hand crafted in Detroit. They offer 5 different complete bikes and each one is topped off with Brooks saddles and Cinelli and Campagnolo parts. Definitely not your average “cheap fixie”.

While it may not be able to carry the extreme loads of Surly’s Big Dummy or an Xtracycle, Ziba’s creation allows you to pack a reasonable amount of cargo without the serious wheelbase of other cargo bikes.

Kissena Velo Fund

Jason Gallacher, the man behind Brooklyn based Affinity Cycles, is embarking on a new mission to build a 250m velodrome and Olympic level training facility on the site of the aging Kissena velodrome. In order to spearhead this project, he launched the Kissena Velo Fund, a non-profit foundation tasked with raising funds for the redevelopment of this world class cycling facility. In order to kick things off, Affinity put together a limited edition run of 250 Kissena track frames. Proceeds from the sale of these bicycles will go to the Velo Fund. This is a terrific way to kick start the fund, and Fyxation is excited to support the effort with rounding out the component end of the build. The Kissena build comes stock with our Comet drop bar, Accela tires, Pilot saddle and Loop bar tape. The crew at Pure Fix aims to capture cycling at it’s purist with simple, cost conscious builds that look and ride great. Their website is clean and simple to use with 12 standard builds available, all starting at $325. While Pure Fix has done a great job with their standard builds, you can still tweak the grips and bars to get exactly the color or ride you want. I had a chance to check out their bikes first hand at the SF Bike Expo last weekend, and even ride one that our friend picked up, and the bikes live up to their name. The thing I love about an affordable bike like this, is it gets more people riding. In a city like SF, who wants to battle with parking and traffic when you’re getting around on a daily basis, and the Pure Fix fits the bill.

Of course, with a good friend of ours picking up one of their bikes last weekend, we couldn’t leave SF without setting it up with Fyxation gear. Jeff Williams Velo Art

The first time I spotted Jeff Williams’ artwork in person I said to myself “I’ve gotta pick up a piece.”, but I didn’t. After kicking myself for a couple months, I finally had a chance to make things right and picked up a few prints at the Philly Bike Expo.

Jeff catches the spirit of cycling in both his stills of legendary components and bikes, and in his compositions that manage to bring you into the world of his subjects. There is a definite emotional quality to his paintings; I’m not sure if it’s the cool colors or impressionistic leaning, but Jeff’s work is captivating.

Jeff began his artistic carrier with art lessons beginning at 6 years old, and clearly has continued that passion. He’s also been an avid cyclist and raced on the road, so it was a natural evolution for him to combine his passions. He has a fantastic selection of his work available, reprinted on canvas, which gives them a texture that makes a perfect addition to any cyclists home or office when mounted.

Despite a cold and damp snowy October day, the first day of the Philly Bike Expo was well attended. One booth getting lots of attention was local bag manufacture R.E. Load Bags. R.E. Load bags can be found everywhere in Philly and it’s clear the have strong support in the local cycling community. Founded by former Philly couriers Roland Burns and Ellie Lums (the R and E in R.E. Load), R.E. Load is well known for their functional design and custom applique.

Bicycle Revolutions – Philadelphia PA

We’re in Philadelphia PA for the Philly Bike Expo and we swung by Bicycle Revolutions this morning to check out their new space. Bicycle Revolutions recently moved from a small space to a new building that allows for loads of frames, bikes, components as well as a well earned expansion to the repair department. Owner Bryan “Fuzzy” Van Arsdale took some time to show us around and I can tell you, this is a must stop if you’re in Philly.

Bryan carries the latest frames from Volume, All City, Linus, Affinity, Cinelli and more. Their accessories and component line is expansive as well with gear from ReLoad, Chrome Bags, Soma, Bern and of course Fyxation. Schlick Cycles Northpaw Belt Drive Build

When Dave Schlabowske, of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, was looking to build up his fat bike, he looked local. Wisconsin has a ton of bike talent so to complete his build he started with local builder Schlick Cycle’s Northpaw frame. For those of you that have never ridden a fat bike, they are a blast. You have this feeling that you can roll over anything in you path, whether it’s on the dirt, sand or snow. It’s addictive! The Schlick Northpaw is designed to handle massive 26″ x 4.0 tires and features an optional sliding dropout and split frame to run a belt drive. While the Surley Pugsley is well known on the fat bike scene, companies like Schlick are stepping up the design for the next generation of fat bikes.

Sticking with the theme of building with great local components, Dave spec’d out the ride with Fyxation’s Gates pedals, Curve saddle, BMX grips and end caps. To round out the orange “cheddar” theme it was important for Dave to find great parts, that matched, to accent his build. The Northpaw is also equipped with Hayes Prime Brakes, Answer Rove stem, Answer bars, and was built with care by the crew at Ben’s Cycle.

When it comes to the drive-train, the Gates Belt drive coupled with an Alfine 11-speed internal geared hub. This set up keeps noise down, but most importantly for fat bikes, it keeps crud out. Just saw this posted over at Prolly is Not Probably and had to share. Looks like the guys over at Big Shot Bikes loaned out some of their “fixies” for a topless photo shoot for Treats Magazine. Can’t say I quite get the point of the shoot but I’m not complaining.

Old School Fixed Gear Freestyle

We know that everything comes around again in fashion, but in fixed gear freestyle? Check out this post from Scientific American’s article on fixed gear freestyle’s finest from 1899! I know I’ve seen some of these moves in recent edits.

“Trick riding became widely popular in the late 1880s and 1890s in Europe and America. Bicycle academies and cycle racing had already proved their staying power, and many daring young riders sought ways to take the sport to a new level. In a piece from May 13, 1899, Scientific American featured two well-known trick riders from the States: N.C. Kaufman of Rochester, NY and Lee Richardson of Milwaukee, WI.”

Bianchi Volpe with Mesa Pedals!

Jeff from Urban Velo just sent this over to us. It’s that time of year again where the days get shorter, trails are muddier and cyclo-cross is in full effect. Jeff posted some nice pics of his new Bianchi Volpe that he’s using as his CX bike finished off with our Mesa slim pedals. The Mesa is a great all year pedal and we’ve had a ton of great feedback from people that use them as their fall/winter pedal. The pedal is light and strong but our molded surface pegs are what people dig most about the Mesa in inclement weather. They’re built out of a tough impact grade nylon and the molded pegs are just the right height to give you a little extra grip if you happen to be riding in mud or snow.

Heartland Velo Show – Madison, WI

Still recuperating from a great weekend at the RW24. What can you say about a 24 hour alley cat that is as much a celebration of a great neighborhood and the love of riding, as it is a serious competition; the winning solo rider pumped out nearly 300 miles and completed dozens of bonus laps, including a new tat! No, I didn’t race, but I spent the better part of Friday and Saturday providing tech support to the racers, and rotating in stamping manifests when needed. This event is such a remarkable expression of the Riverwest neighborhood. Neighbors preparing fresh fruit and water for the riders, 3 or 4 live bands playing around the course, several blocks closed off, garage bands playing past midnight and all with the checkpoints and support staff provided by dozens of the RW and Milwaukee locals.

Be sure and check out the full results on the RW24 leaderboard, and if you want to race next year, you better enter early because this years 670 riders sold out the event in a little over 5 hours!

The wire bead version of our Session 700 tire is now available through stocking Fyxation dealers for only $39.95. Available as a 700x23c, 28c and 35c in white, black and dual compound white, the wire bead Sessions offer the same aggressive tread pattern and construction as our foldable bead tires. By using a steel bead instead of Kevlar, we were able to bring down our manufacturing costs and unlike the US based airlines (search for Airline Ticket Tax and Bend Over) we were able to pass the savings along to our customers.

Sadio Parts Hot Bar

We’ve been hearing a lot about Sadio Parts recently (most recently on Prolly’s site). They’ve been adding a lot of product over the last few months and recently came out with a line of bars called the Hot Bar. The Sadio Hot Bar is a Cr-Mo riser bar with a 22.2 clamp diameter available in black, grey, purple and red. It looks like their product is available on the east coast from The Grime and on the left coast from iMinus D – a small fixed gear shop in San Jose.

Philly Bike Expo 2011

We just booked our space for the Philly Bike Expo. The show is in Philadelphia, PA this October and is the second year the show is being put on. Last year the show drew over 2000 attendees and had a sweet exhibitor list. This year’s list will be even better now that we’re coming (Hah!).

Seriously though, this show is hosted by Bilenky Cycle Works and features a number of other great frame builders that make everything from hand crafted framesets to complete bicycles. For more info check out the link below.

2012 SE Quad Fix

Our boy Tom just forwarded this over to us. Looks like the guys over at SE Bikes continue to roll out new fixed gear bikes. They already have a pretty good line up of fixed gear complete bikes with the SE Draft, Lager and PK Ripper Fixed. The 2012 SE Quad Fix will be available as a frameset later this year and appears to cater to the fixed gear freestyle crowd.

Chrome Salvage Series Bags

The guys at Chrome just sent us over an announcement about their new Salvage Series Bags. These bags are made out of reclaimed materials and put a cool spin on the concept of “reuse and recycle”. This first run of bags used re-purposed US Army tents as the materials for the external panels of their Heritage Citizen “to create unique, one-of-a-kind bags. Built in Chico, California, each series is limited by the quantity of available material. Each bag is stamped with the lot size and its unique number within the lot. Once they’re gone, they’re gone!”

The Chrome Salvage Series: Reclaimed Bags are available at Chrome’s retail outlets and a few select dealers.

VAGX Locksta Pedal Strap

Just saw this over at Pedal Consumption. Looks like there’s another company entering the increasingly crowded pedal strap market. VAGX is a Korean based company known for their messenger bags, backpacks and other soft goods. They are selling their VAGX Locksta Pedal Strap for 56,000 South Korean Won (about $52.00 USD). It looks like they have a few different color options but if you look close it looks like they’ve borrowed a lot of their design from the Holdfast pedal strap.

Sofus Francisco Tigh10 Pro Pedal Strap

Just saw this video from Sofus Francisco over at Pedal Consumption. Sofus Francisco is based in Denmark and they’re known for their quality leather pedal straps for track bikes. They have a leather double strap designed for more of a track style pedal and a “freestyle pedal strap” that is more like a leather version of a Holdfast FRS.

We borrowed a few images from their site to show you their new Tigh10 Pro Pedal Strap. Looks quality!

2011 BLB Bigmama Catalog

BLB Bigmama has just released their 2011 catalog and it looks great. BLB is the distribution arm of Brick Lane Bikes, a well known track bike shop in London. BLB is the Fyxation distributor in the UK and Europe and if you scroll to page 105 you can check out our gear.

When we started working with Brick Lane in 2009 they mostly sold other companies products. Over the last 2 years they’ve expanded like crazy and now the BLB line offers frames, forks, hubs, spokes and pretty much everything in between.

What is Bikes Are Better?

On May 4, 2011 we announced our Bikes Are Better soft good lines. Bikes Are Better is a way for us to give back to the cycling community by raising money for local and national bicycle advocacy groups through the sale of Bikes Are Better branded products. Currently we offer a T-shirt, a messenger bag and a pedal strap and plan to offer more gear in the near future.

We wanted to use this post as a way to explain how the idea for Bikes Are Better came about. Only a few of us know the full story behind Fyxation, what life events lead us to start Fyxation and what the road has been like to get us to where we are today. Don’t worry I won’t bore you with that story. The fact is Fyxation was founded in 2009 by two brothers with a simple idea to come out with an affordable, durable and well designed line of urban cycling parts. In fact, it’s almost been 2 years (July 1st) since we delivered our first product.

We owe a lot to the cycling community and we are lucky enough to say that our favorite sport and past time has also become the way we make our living. We recently got together and wanted to come up with a way to give back to the cycling community but as a young and growing company, it’s not always easy to simply donate money to a cause you believe in. Our Bikes Are Better initiative allows us to do just that. Through the sale of our Bikes Are Better branded products we are able to raise money for local and national cycling non-profits. Our plan is to continue to expand the line of products that sport the Bikes Are Better logo with a new cycling related non-profit receiving the proceeds each month.

Burro Pedal Straps with Fyxation Pedals

We’ve had a few people hit us up recently about which pedal straps/foot retention systems work best with our Mesa and Gates pedals. One request came in yesterday for someone looking to our Mesa pedal with the Burro Bags Chronic pedal straps or Burro Reggie pedal straps. Unfortunately, the Burro pedal straps don’t fit with our Mesa pedals. The Mesa’s are a slim pedal that doesn’t have room for larger bottom straps and so far the Hold Fast FRS is the only strap we’ve seen that really fits well with the Mesa.

The Gates pedal on the other hand is modeled after a more traditional BMX style platform pedal and has a taller profile and has plenty of room to fit most straps – including the Burro Chronic, Reggie and their new Mike Schmitt Pro Model.

We’ve been trying to partner with the guys at Burro to get their straps on our site but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Check out our webstore for 3 other great options.

Jeweled White All City Big Block

Just saw this over at All City. They’ve added a new color to their Big Block frame and it looks amazing! The Big Block is All City’s track frameset and features a traditional track geometry, tire clearance up to a 32c, affordable/durable steel tubing and signature drop outs. “While it’s hard to tell from the photos, the paint job is incredibly sparkly in the light, and is very reminiscent of the sparkle often seen on Keirin frames from Japan.

Also you should know that the photo of the dropouts above is of my proto Big Block and we have since changed the way the stays are capped to the round style of the Nature Boy. Making them much more elegant. Also unlike the previous generation of Big Block’s the new whites are E.D. coated for rust prevention.

Superb Build – Brooklyn Machine Works

Just saw this post on the site of Fyxation shop Superb Bicycle in Boston. The guys at Superb built up this Brooklyn Machine Works Glow in the Dark Gangsta Track with a bunch of great parts. To mention a few – Selle Italia Turbo Saddle, Volume Trickster bars, Shadow Conspiracy half link chain on a Cobra crankset, Hold Fast pedal straps. What got us most excited was to see the set of black Session 700′s and matching Mesa pedal. Great build guys!

Prototype Hold Fast Foot Straps

Just saw this post on Prolly Is Not Probably. Looks like Hold Fast is working on a new design of their popular foot retention system (FRS). We borrowed a photo from John’s post to show how great our new Mesa pedals look when paired with the Hold Fast strap. Diagon Alley Cat

Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Bar – All City

Was just checking out the All City blog and saw that their new All City Fuzzy Bar is now available. Named after Bryan from Fyxation shop Bicycle Revolutions in Philly, the All City Fuzzy Bar is a steel 3″ CroMo riser bar with a knurled clamp surface, 22.2 clamp diameter, gradual 3” rise resists bending and graduated cut marks. The Fuzzy Bar has a width of 710mm and weighs in at 520g. This latest addition to growing line up of All City Components has a US MSRP of $50.00 and is available here.
