Big Shot Bikes “Fixie” Kiosk

The guys over at Big Shot Bikes have been around for a few years selling affordable custom fixed gear bikes on their website http://www.bigshotbikes.com direct to consumer. When I first met them it was at Dealer Camp in Park City, UT where they were taking their distribution model to a new level and they were there pitching their “fixies” to bike shops. The next time I saw them was at Interbike where they were doing more of the same and were obviously trying to step up their game and get into more bike shops.

The problem with a direct to consumer brand like Big Shot Bikes is that they offer a ton of customization on their website that they couldn’t possibly offer a dealer in terms of models/colors/sizes that the dealer could realistically expect to stock. I’m sure this posed a problem for Big Shot while they were out pitching to shops. My guess is shops were hesitant to bring in their bikes and basically act as a show room for a few Big Shot models where a consumer could get a basic idea of what Big Shot Bikes had to offer, then simply go purchase a pimped out version of their bike at home online.

Well I think Big Shot listened. They have started installing Big Shot Kiosks at shops around the country where if you don’t like what you see on the shop floor, you can simply hop on the kiosk, customize your fixie, and have it delivered directly to the shop. This is a super smart concept and something that nobody else in the bike industry is doing. It’s basically like a Dell model for bikes only rather than simply going direct, you’re involving the bike shop in the process. Super smart idea guys!

All City “Save the Track Bike Bar”

The team over at All City just released their newest handlebar and even though it looks a lot like our Comet track drop bar, we thought we’d give it a plug here anyways. The All City Save the Track Bike Bar (quite a mouthful) or the All City STTB bar for short is a traditional deep track bar that comes in black and polished in both 40cm and 42cm widths. The big difference between the All City drop handlebar and ours is that their bar has a 31.8mm bar clamp and the Comet track bar (for now) is a 25.4.

State Bicycle Co. Video – The Contender

The guys at State Bicycle Company just released a new video edit of one of their team riders on a midnight right in the streets of Pheonix. The video highlights the State Bike Co Contender which is a part of their “premium” line. The State Bicycle Co Contender is a silver version of their standard one size fits all fixie frame with their new Contender carbon fork the State Bicycle Co pursuit bullhorn bars.

Fat Bike Pedal

Our buddy John at QBP just sent us over this picture of his Surly Moonlander that he finished off with our white Mesa pedals. When we launched the Mesa we knew it was a great thin platform pedal for urban riding. However, it didn’t take long for the fat bike guys to catch onto the benefits of the Mesa and we keep seeing more and more photos like this popping up. For fat bike riders the Mesa offers a great wide platform for your boots and the fact that they are made out of a tough nylon makes them durable and warmer than a cold metal pedal when riding in the snow.

Our new Mesa MP with replaceable metal pins is another great option for the fat-bike rider that’s looking for a little more grip and the flexibility to take pins out or replace them if needed.

Sports-Vue Wearable Sports Camera

Time to get off the gold plated La-Z-Boy chair you’ve been sitting in the past few years GoPro. You’ve got a new competitor in the wearable/gear mountable sports camera world and based on what I saw this weekend they’re coming in hot.

Sports-Vue is a new company based out of Salt Lake City, UT that claims they are “the affordable solution for wearable and gear mounted sports cameras”. These guys make a complete line of video cameras that like the GoPro, can be worn or mounted on your gear and let you take HD videos of whatever fun stuff you’re doing. Unlike the GoPro however, these guys have a complete line up of cameras designed for any budget, and not just a few high priced options. Their product line starts at $55.00 for The Widget helmet cam and tops out at $265 for the full featured 1080p HD wearable Sports-Vue 360HD that includes an LCD monitor and is scuba rated to 60 feet!

Freestyle Bars and Accela Tires for the Win?

Last year when we launched the Steely HT freestyle rise bar and Accela road/commuter tires we knew we had 2 winning products on our hands even though they targeted completely different riders. The Steely HT is a heat treated rise bar made out of 4130 chromoly that was built with the fixed gear freestyle rider in mind and the Accela tires were designed for the rider looking for a fast and long lasting road/commuting tire with a subtle tread pattern and puncture resistance.

Well last week at the Red Bull Ride & Style event in San Francisco the Steely bars and Accela tires both ended up in the winners circle. What surprised us however was that they were both on the same bike! Fyxation sponsored rider Addison Zawada outfitted his Giant Omnium with our Steely bar and Accela tires and ended up getting 1st place in the Ride & Style track race. While the two products were designed with different riders in mind Addison obviously found the winning combination with this set up. Fyxation Pedal Strap Installation

Looking for a cheat sheet on installing your Fyxation Pedal Straps? We put together a short video and detailed pics to go through the installation process. No tools are required and installation takes only a couple minutes. Special thanks to Young Distractions for the soundtrack.

Tools needed
- None

Step 1: Locate Left and Right Pedal Straps
The Gates pedal strap is designed with a right and left strap to give the strap the proper angle when installed. You’re straps come with a sticker labeled “left” to designate the left strap.

To determine the left from right strap without the label, look at the back of the strap. The left side of the two inch webbing is longer on the left strap.

Step 2: Locate your left and right pedals
If you’re pedals are on the bike, this is easy. The right pedal is on the side of your bike with your cranks and chain (aka the drive-side). If you’re pedals aren’t on the bike, look at the end of the spindle. There is usually an “L” or “R” stamped on the spindle end or on the wrench flats.

Step 3: Install the lower strap.
Open up the straps and slide the thin 1 inch webbing of the lower straps through the body of the pedal. Pull the webbing all the way through the pedal.

Step 4: Align the 2 inch webbing
Once the lower straps are through the pedal, align the 2 inch webbing on the inside edge of the pedal flush with the pedal body. This helps set up the proper angle for the installed strap

Turn the pedal around and align the 2 inch webbing on the outer edge of the pedal. The webbing should be flush with the top of the pedal body.

Step 5: Attach webbing
Attach one of the 1 inch straps to the 2 inch webbing at an angle across the strap.

Attach the other 1 inch strap by angling it across both the 1 inch and 2 inch pieces. This sets up the 1 inch straps at the proper angle out of the pedal body.

Step 6: Attach the upper strap
Slide your foot in the pedal and attach the upper strap to the other straps. The strap should be loose enough so you can easily slide your foot in and out. Do not adjust your straps while riding. Stop your bike, adjust your straps, and continue on your way.

Red Bull Ride & Style Domination

Fyxation sponsored rider Addison Zawada just spanked the competition at the Red Bull Ride & Style event in San Francisco. Addison hails from Florida and made the trip out to SF to compete and not only won the Red Bull Minidrome event he also took first place in the track race! Just this week before the events Addison reached out to us to get set up with our new Steely HT rise bars for the competition. The bars landed just in time and its awesome to see the pics coming out from the event of Addison dominating the competition with the Steely bars front and center.

If this is the first time you’ve heard of Addison it won’t be the last. He’s a young guy that’s making a splash out there and we couldn’t be happier to have him as part of our crew. Congrats Addison!

Retrospec Bicycle Company

When we are at Interbike last year we had the opportunity to meet the guys at Retrospec Bicycles. They were pretty nice guys and we’ve been meaning to write something about them so better late than never. Retrospec is an “urban lifestyle and fixed-gear bicycle” company based in southern California. The company was started in 2010 by a 21 year old dude named Ely Alexander. Ely must have a money tree in his backyard or some generous parents but either way, he was able to start a company that sources super cheap fixed gear bikes and parts of China and sell them here in the US. Retrospec fixed gear bikes retail for $349 and are available online and through bike shops. Now shops like to make at least a 35% margin on bikes so imagine what price the guys at Retrospec are buying them out of China for that they can still make money while selling to dealers for that price. Crazy!

They offer a complete line of fixed gear bikes, FGFS bikes and coaster brake bikes. They don’t list what material their fixed gear bikes are made out of but I’m guessing they’re hi-ten steel (high tensile steel) which is affordable but a bit heavy and not as strong as chromoly. A lot of people think that fixed gear bikes are dying and that they’re a fad but if you’re a young kid in southern California right now fixed gear bikes are like what BMX bikes were like when I was a kid. I never did more than a bunny hop on my BMX bike but that didn’t matter. I still rode BMX just like these kids ride their “fixies”. Anyway, while you may have never heard of Retrospec, I’m pretty sure they’re selling a crapload of $349 fixed gear bikes right now.

The guys at Burro Bags just released their second edition MTS Mudflap Pedal Strap. This strap has some cool new features and is targeted to the fixed gear freestyle rider that wants a more durable strap and doesn’t mind paying $65 to get them. Burro is a cool little company out of Florida that is known for their messenger bags and backpacks. It’s nice to see them innovating their freestyle pedal straps. Great job guys!

Endomondo National Bike Challenge

Workout tracking and stats site Endomondo is throwing down a challenge to all cyclists; log as many miles as you can between May 1st and August 31st with a goal of uniting 50,000 cyclists in logging 10 million miles. Their National Bike Challenge, which is sponsored by Bikes Belong and the League of American Bicyclists, is a terrific way to really show the impact cycling nationwide. You can watch the miles, calories and thousands of tons of carbon dioxide savings add up right from their site.

You can easily log your miles from your smart phone using their free app, and share your commutes or workouts easily with your friends through your social media outlet of choice. This app is really simple to use. Just hit start, stash your phone in your pocket, and hit stop when your done. Your stats are automatically uploaded to your Endomondo account so you can check out speed, distance and elevation from your phone or computer. You can set routes, race your best times, or your friends.

Red Bull Mini Drome Tire Blowout

Fyxation sponsored rider Addison Zawada was in Charlotte this weekend competing at a Red Bull Mini Drome event. Normally Addison walks away with first place at these events but this time he ended up running 3rd. Not too bad considering #1 and #2 were riding BMX bikes and Addison was on a track bike. Not to mention his tire blew out while ripping the mini-drome. Check out the video below to see the action.

I’ve been spending a lot of time on Kickstarter recently and here’s another cool bicycle related Kickstarter project that recently got funded. These guys set out to raise $18K and ended up raising over $80,000!

The Defender Bike Light from Gotham Bicycle Defense claims to be the world’s first theft resistant bike light. This thing looks pretty bad ass and not only lights your way, it’s mounted in a way that’s designed to prevent theft and it’s waterproof. More info below:

Playing With Instragram

I went out on a brief ride this morning here in Utah and thought I would use the spring snowfall we had last night to play with Instragram a bit. I just downloaded the app on my iphone the other day and so far I think it’s pretty cool. I don’t know if it’s “a billion dollars cool” but it’s a fun way to share pictures and tweak them with their built in photo effects. Below is one of the pictures I took on my ride using Instragram. One is the original and the other 2 were modified using Instragram. What do you think?

GripRings Silicone Grips by Spurcycle

Today is Kickstarter day here at the Fyxation blog. I was just checking out another bicycle related Kickstarter project by the guys at Spurcycle. Spurcycle is based out of San Francisco and is a start-up bike parts company that has designed a silocone grip system that they call GripRings. Basically GripRings is a series of small silicone rings that are designed to be used together to form the grip of your choosing.

Now silicone grips are nothing new and the guys at ESI have been selling Silicone grips for years. I’ve never ridden them but I hear they’re great for all types of riding and are pretty tacky and comfortable. I don’t know if GripRings is using the same type of material as ESI but their unique selling point is that you can take these small ringlets and put them together on your bars to make a grip as long or as colorful as you’d like. It’s a pretty cool idea and even if they don’t get funded on Kickstarter I’m sure we’ll see this product brought to market. More info is available on Kickstarter or at http://www.spurcycle.com.

The Sutro from Mission Bicycle

We always like to keep an eye on Kickstarter to see what sort of cool stuff people are trying to bring to market. A few weeks back we saw a Kickstarter project that caught our attention from the guys at Mission Bicycle. Now these guys are an existing bike brand that sells a lot of bikes so the only real reason to put something up on Kickstarter would be to pre-sell a project that was already in the works (they can afford to bring a new bike to market). We’ll after literally spanking their $10,000 goal, the Sutro Bicycle from Mission Bicycle Company is on it’s way (it’s probably already in San Francisco).

I used to live in San Francisco and the view out my window was of Sutro Tower so I’m a big fan of the name. The Mission Sutro is made out of 4130 cromoly and ships with a Shimano Alfine internal geared hub so you can get the benefit of gears without having a derailleur hanging off your bike. They used internal cable routing as well which helps keep the clean look of a fixed gear or single speed bike even though the bike has 8 speeds available. Nice looking bike, nice go to market strategy. Bravo guys!

Fyxation 2012 Handlebar Collection

Earlier this year we launched a complete line of handlebars that included our Rodeo bullhorn bar, Rodeo Pursuit bullhorn bar, Alterra Cafe bar, Steely HT rise bar and Comet drop bar. These bars added to our already extensive line of BMX and track grips, bar tape and bar end plugs. To showcase our complete 2012 collection of bars, tape, grips and end caps we put together this short video with some help from the guys over at COG Magazine. The video is about 30 seconds long but is compiled of hundreds of still photos taken over 3 days in the City of Milwaukee.

Black Market Bicycle: Project Norris

Black Market has used their NSF frame-set as the foundation for an urban assault single speed that really stands on its own. Complete with clearance for 40c tires, a 400mm fork, profile cranks and hubs, this bike is part road bike, part Bradley assault vehicle. I have spent the past year playing with iterations of drop bars, bullhorns, three piece cranks and tires on my Milwaukee Bruiser and have ended up with something remarkably similar. The idea of using a FGFS frame as the foundation of an ultra rugged road rig is sound, and Black Market has done a great job of executing it with their new Morris build.

Pedal Nation PDX Bicycle Show Recap

This last weekend we attended the PDX Bicycle Show in Portland, OR. This is the 3rd installment of this Pedal Nation event and is our second time at the show. The show organizers Aaron and Andrea put on a great event and other than dealing with crazy vendors that think people are stealing from them (that’s me – and by the way the place is safe. I’m just stupid.) they looked pretty calm running such a huge event. Hats off to them and to Portland for pulling off a great event.

We always love going to shows because it’s a great chance to get out there and talk about bike stuff and a great chance to meet interesting people in the industry and to learn their stories. It was great getting a chance to meet Jonathan from BikePortland.org and to meet the man behind the Retroshift mud proof brake/shifting system. This is not your average brifter and we wish Adam the best of luck. Not to mention, Portland is a great bike community and with over 90 bike shops in the area there’s something for every cyclist in Portland.

Mesa MP Release

Fyxation 2012 Video Catalog

Since we’ve started Fyxation, it’s been our goal to produce components that let you personalize your ride with quality, affordable bicycle parts. With the 2012 cycling season underway, we decided to put together a video that visualizes what is possible. We have loads of new components available now just in time to enjoy the unseasonably warm weather.

In conjunction with the video release we will also be giving away one of the complete bikes (Fyxation parts and all) to one of our Facebook friends. Not a fan, sign up, already a fan you’re in! The video is entirely composed of still photographs shot over two days in the studio and one day on the streets by Peter DiAntoni of COG Magazine. Meticulous set up and lighting was required with the hundreds of component changes in the studio, and challenges of lighting and camera position on a moving rider. Steely HT Review: Pedal Consumption

In the last few months we’ve introduced 5 new handlebars and each one caters to a slightly different rider. The Steely HT bar was a bit different than the rest of our product mix but we felt that no bar company that sells to urban cyclist could claim that had a complete offering without a bar targeted to the fixed gear freestyle crowd. FGFS has evolved a ton over the years and a lot of companies have come out with parts catered to this unique style of riding. When we looked at the overall market we saw a lot of bars on the market yet after speaking to a ton of riders, we felt they were all missing a little something.

The Steely HT is a heat treated rise bar that is both light weight and strong. Heat treated 4130 Cromoly was our material of choice because it allowed us to make a very wide bar that was lightweight yet had the strength needed to meet the needs of today’s riders. To get similar strength a lot of companies have added a cross bar to their FGFS rise bars but we felt that added too much weight and made the bar so stiff that you’d take a pounding after landing any decent size trick. Bikeminimalism – Winters Edge

The guys at Bikeminimalism sent over this cool little edit this morning. Its starting to warm up around the country and a lot of people are starting to pull out their bikes after their winter hibernation. Bikeminimalism thinks that is rubbish and wants you to remember you can bike year round. Handsome Cycles 2012 Catalog

In 2009 when we were at our first Interbike, I was hanging out at the booth watching people walk by and I saw someone that I recognized. It took me a couple seconds but then I realized it was my college girlfriend’s buddy Jesse Erickson. Turns out Jesse was at Interbike as an exhibitor and he was introducing the world to his new bike brand Handsome Cycles.

Fast forward to 2012 and Handsome has come a long way. They have a pretty complete line up of frames and forks which now includes the Shop Bike and the Dirty Harry 29er. They recently introduced their new Bogart sealed bearing coaster brake hub which promises to come to the aid of the fixed gear rider that suddenly realizes that they wouldn’t mind coasting now and then but still wants the look and feel of riding fixed.

State Bicycle Co. Contender

Just saw that the crew at State Bicycle Company launched a new model called the Contender. The State Bicycle Co. Contender is part of their new “Premium” division and is geared towards the rider looking for a little more than just a cheap fixie. The Contender ships with the new State Bicycle Co. Carbon fork, FSA Orbit MX integrated headset, Sram S100 crankset, Sram Truvativ Powerspline bottom bracket and a 48/16 gear ratio. Looks like State is trying to step it up a bit and expand their offering. Should be interesting to hear the feedback on these builds.

When we launched the Mesa pedals we were pumped about their use as a great all around urban cycling pedal. Well it appears that the Mesa is developing quite a following in a completely different arena. Fat Bike riders have embraced the Mesa as a great winter riding pedal. The feedback we’ve had so far is that the molded pin version of the Mesa and the new Mesa MP (metal pin) are great when riding your fatbike with big winter boots due to the Mesa’s thin profile and wide body. Also the molded and metal pegs do a great job holding onto winter boots that can get packed with ice and snow. Finally, because the Mesa is made out of an impact grade nylon and not a metal body, the Mesa pedals help keep your feet warm when riding on cold days.

Iditarod Invitational 2012

Like many, we have already had a taste of Spring and a mild Winter. It’s hit nearly 50 a few days already, and despite the call for up to 8″ of snow tonight, I heard it will be nearly 60 next week. Hardly Winter weather for Wisco. With thoughts of Spring I think its a good idea to take a minute to think about the hardy racers chugging away at the Iditarod in Alaska. The effort these racers, including cyclists on fat-bikes, put in is amazing. As of the latest reports there are 5 cyclists still in the Iditabike race, and given the “relatively” good conditions, they have a chance to pass the foot racers, which doesn’t always happen. You can follow the action as these incredible athletes make there way through some of the most rugged conditions on the Iditarod site.

Just saw this over at Pedal Consumption. The guys at YNOT Cycle up in the great white north just released a leather version of their popular and aptly named “Pedal Straps”. The YNOT leather pedal straps are covered with full grained reclaimed leather and retail for $65.00. They look like a nice strap if you can swing $65.00 for straps. I’d be a bit worried about them getting lifted off my bike but that’s just me.

Mesa Slim Pedals for Fat Bikes

When we released the Mesa slim pedal we knew we had a great package; lightweight impact grade nylon body, double sealed outer bearing / sealed inner bushing, and an ultra-slim profile. We’ll it’s clear that the Fat Bike community is also tuned into the benefits of the Mesa.

While it’s wide platform and sealed system is perfect for adverse trail conditions, the impact grade Nylon body has the added benefit of insulating your foot from the giant heat sink which is your bike. While not a big deal in warm months, anyone who isn’t afraid of riding when the thermometer dives knows alloy pedals can rob your feet of needed warmth.

All City Macho Man: Cyclocross Complete

At Frostbike last weekend, the crew at All City unveiled their new complete CX bike; the Macho Man. Cyclepedia Bicycle Photo Collection

Just finished reading through a must have coffee table book for any cyclist. Cyclepedia: A Century of Iconic Bicycle Design is a book of images taken of the amazing bicycle collection of Michale Embacher. I think it was released early last year in the UK but is now available in the US. Cyclepedia is available on Amazon.com for only $21.50. We borrowed the description below from Amazon to sum things up.

New Pedal Consumption Website

No the title to this post wasn’t a typo. Rickshaw Bagworks Zero Messenger bags are now available on Zazzle. I am still trying to get my hands around what Zazzle is but from what I can gather it’s a site that lets you make your own custom gear. You can make anything from a coffee mug for your Dad to a messenger bag from Rickshaw. It looks like they have a number of existing designs you can use (over 500!) and you can also use your own image to make a truly custom bag. What a cool idea!

We’ve worked with the guys at Rickshaw Bagworks before and we are happy for them that they hooked up with Zazzle. I think it’s going to be a game changer for their company and one that will help them substantially grow their business.

White Road Invests in Public Bikes

To an outsider our blog posts must look like a random series of unrelated stories but there’s always some method to our madness. This post is no different.

I was just reading on the BRaIN website (Bicycle Retailer or http://www.bicyclretailer.com) that Clif Bar founder Gary Erickson’s venture capital fund made an investment in Public Bikes, gaining a minority interest in the company. We’ve written about Public Bikes before and think they have a pretty cool brand, product and are positioned in a growing segment of the bike market. Obviously the guys at White Road felt the same way.

According to BRaIN, White Road also owns a stake in Santa Cruz Bicycles. I’m not saying we’re looking, but if the guys at White Road see this pop up on their Google Alerts, feel free to check out our site.

Just saw this over at Pedal Consumption. 14 Bike Co. in London just launched a pretty slick online bicycle builder and to kick things off they’re throwing a pretty cool contest where you can win a free bike. The book covers everything from the history of the bicycle to bicycle advocacy. I particularly like the section (their)Story, where different riders discuss everything from why they ride to the fear they feel getting on the saddle in an urban environment. When we were at Interbike this year we previewed 5 new handlebars that were going to be part of our 2012 line up. Of all the bars we introduced the Rodeo Pursuit Bullhorn bars were the biggest hit. Unlike a traditional bullhorn handlebar, our Rodeo Pursuit offers a subtle 40mm drop before the bar flares up. The added length and additional bends make this a super versatile bar that is as much designed for upright riding as it is for sprints. Chrome Bag Store – Chicago

Just before Christmas I headed to Chicago for the day to visit shops and my little bro. I spent quite a bit of time riding around the Wicker Park neighborhood. This area has a great vibe and is loaded with coffee shops, great eats, and some of Chicago’s best shops like Rapid Transit and Copenhagen Cyclery; right in the middle of it all is the Chrome Bag store. Chrome’s Chicago location has a mellow vibe and calming layout, and its really impressive to see their entire collection in one place. From shoes and apparel to messenger bags and roll tops, this store is packed with goodies.

I was lucky and hit a lull between holiday shoppers and Andrea was nice enough to show me around. One of the most impressive spots in the place is their custom bag design center. Not only can you pick through fabrics, color layouts, patches and customer samples, they actually make the bags right there in house! While not sewing daily, they have pro in house that stitches up custom orders weekly. As if that wasn’t enough, Thursdays after hours they have a store party with music and other collaborations. Definitely a must see if you’re in the windy city.

Public Bikes – European Inspired Bikes

On a recent trip to San Francisco we spent an evening having drinks at 16th and Valencia in The Mission. While our primary goal was to imbibe, we were able to spend a lot of time checking out people going about their business on their bicycles. One of the things we noticed was there were a number of people riding nice looking bikes from a company called Public Bikes. Public Bikes is based in San Francisco and are known for European-inspired bikes or Dutch bikes that you see all over Europe. Upon further review, Public Bikes offers a complete line of bikes geared towards people that like to ride through town on a comfortable bike and are more interested in the journey than getting their on time.

They offer two different models of bikes – the Standard and the Classic with each model offering a Sloped Diamond Frame version and a Step Through version. Their bikes come in a number of different colors and you can configure your bike based on your height, color preference and even what additional accessories you want to add. They offer a full line of accessories including helmets form Nutcase and Bern, lights from Knog and PDW, and a mix of racks, bells and other items.

State Bicycle Co. Loops Tour

Over the last year we’ve had the opportunity to work with the guys at State Bicycle Co. a bit (we’ve actually been bugging them to carry our gear but we’ll save that for another post) and we are very impressed with their company, product and the things they are doing in the cycling community. This year they are taking their local Loops rides nationwide and have an 11 city tour planned. Starting in Austin in January, the Loops Tour will visit both coasts and many points in between. Keep an eye on the State Bicycle Co (http://www.statebicycle.com) website and Facebook page for updates and to see if the State Bicycle Co Loops series is coming to a city near you.

Biking Can Save Us

Skeletons NYC

How often are you making your way around town and you see the skeleton of a bike locked to parking meter or bike rack, and wonder “how did that happen?” As a cyclist you can’t pass this scene and not pause for the loss of someone’s bike. I know when we were in Philly recently, the scene was all too common, and I took pity on some of these remains with my own photos. Marko Vuorinen has taken to documenting these sad scenes even further, and published them on skeletonsnyc.com. There is a melancholy feeling, yet strange peace, in his photos of these bike skeletons in NYC.

Don’t Get Racked

So, you’re returning from an epic ride–you open you’re garage door, and SMASH! Whether you blame your state of exhaustion or endorphin buzz you know you just got racked, and caused a whole lot of damage to your bike, probably your car and definitively you’re garage. Ok, while I’ve never done this (knock on wood), I have plenty of friends who have, including a neighbor that recently turned a Thule Cargo Box into fiberglass shrapnel.

Heads Up System offers a system to remind you when you are returning home with gear on your rack. Place a transponder on your bike or kayak and when you approach you’re garage you get an audible reminder in the car and a visual LED alert inside the garage. This system is pretty slick and much cheaper than the deductible from your insurance company– and far better than the crap your friends will give you for smashing your ride. Detroit Bicycle Company – Motor City Fixed

When we were at Interbike this year the guys from Detroit Bicycle Company came by our booth. We had never heard of them before and were interested in their story. They are based in Detroit, a city that’s been pretty hammered by the economy. The Fyxation brothers are originally from the Detroit area so we’re stoked to see what they’re doing. Rather than following the model that’s all the rage these days – super cheap fixed gear completes made out in China – the guys at Detroit Bicycle Company are building custom fixed gear bikes and according to their site the frames are hand crafted in Detroit. They offer 5 different complete bikes and each one is topped off with Brooks saddles and Cinelli and Campagnolo parts. Definitely not your average “cheap fixie”.

The creative group at Ziba set to task to create the ultimate utility bike as part of the Oregon Manifest competition. Built by Signal Cycles, the Fremont utility bike is well thought out to incorporate everything you need to use your bike to get around everyday.

One of the most unique features is the stow-able side car. The side car, which flips up to integrate with the rear rack, turns this stylish city bike into a cargo ready ride. While it may not be able to carry the extreme loads of Surly’s Big Dummy or an Xtracycle, Ziba’s creation allows you to pack a reasonable amount of cargo without the serious wheelbase of other cargo bikes.

Kissena Velo Fund

Jason Gallacher, the man behind Brooklyn based Affinity Cycles, is embarking on a new mission to build a 250m velodrome and Olympic level training facility on the site of the aging Kissena velodrome. In order to spearhead this project, he launched the Kissena Velo Fund, a non-profit foundation tasked with raising funds for the redevelopment of this world class cycling facility. In order to kick things off, Affinity put together a limited edition run of 250 Kissena track frames. Proceeds from the sale of these bicycles will go to the Velo Fund. This is a terrific way to kick start the fund, and Fyxation is excited to support the effort with rounding out the component end of the build. The Kissena build comes stock with our Comet drop bar, Accela tires, Pilot saddle and Loop bar tape. Pure Fix Cycles – SF Bike Expo

The crew at Pure Fix aims to capture cycling at it’s purist with simple, cost conscious builds that look and ride great. Their website is clean and simple to use with 12 standard builds available, all starting at $325. While Pure Fix has done a great job with their standard builds, you can still tweak the grips and bars to get exactly the color or ride you want. I had a chance to check out their bikes first hand at the SF Bike Expo last weekend, and even ride one that our friend picked up, and the bikes live up to their name. The thing I love about an affordable bike like this, is it gets more people riding. In a city like SF, who wants to battle with parking and traffic when you’re getting around on a daily basis, and the Pure Fix fits the bill.

Of course, with a good friend of ours picking up one of their bikes last weekend, we couldn’t leave SF without setting it up with Fyxation gear. The addition of our new Alterra Cafe Bar, grips, end plugs, Pilot saddle and Mesa pedals really sets off this build; the Rickshaw Bags top tube pad is a stylish touch as well. The rules are simple. Send a picture of your current tape/grips to info@fyxation.com. We’ll pick the three nastiest looking set ups and replace them with a shiny new set of Loop cloth or foam tape. Winners will be announced on November 8th and will be posted on our site and on our Facebook page.

	The creative group at Ziba set to task to create the ultimate utility bike as part of the Oregon Manifest competition. Built by Signal Cycles, the Fremont utility bike is well thought out to incorporate everything you need to use your bike to get around everyday. One of the most unique features is the stow-able side car. The side car, which flips up to integrate with the rear rack, turns this stylish city bike into a cargo ready ride. While it may not be able to carry the extreme loads of Surly’s Big Dummy or an Xtracycle, Ziba’s creation allows you to pack a reasonable amount of cargo without the serious wheelbase of other cargo bikes. The Fremont also features a step-through frame for easy mounting and dismounting, upright riding position and integrated LED lights.
