I was looking light fork for my Author Ronin SL with straight steerer, axle and mounts for bikepacking, all roads lead to Fyxation!
I really wanted for this fork to work but 1) I had too much primer on the steerer tube that I had a difficulty to seat the crown race. I had to file and sand it down and get a second crown race to make it work. 2) I also had a difficulty to mount the flat mount brake due to one of the post holes has some kind of junk in it. Maybe I got a lemon one. 3) The web site list all the frames that this fork works on but it did not work on mine. The brake hose kept getting pinched by the barrel adjuster on the frame. And when I called and asked they had no answer for it and referred me to the frame manufacturer. some kind of false advertising to me. 4) i tried to return the fork but no good luck. As I said I really wanted for this to work but it did not.
So far the fork works and looks great. The Sparta fork ticked all the boxes for my needs: lightweight carbon, eyelets, option for straight steerer, thru axle. Good stuff.
Had a chance to test ride this for about 100 miles or so and it's awesome on the MS. If anything it sharpened an already sweet-handling bike and it looks great too especially compared to the gaspipe unicrown stock fork. The alloy steerer version saved 1.1lbs from stock. And you get rid of the weird MS "dropouts". Couple quibbles that in no way diminish my satisfaction: It has a lot of vertical clearance but not as much horizontal clearance. I had to get creative mounting the fender on a 650x42mm tire to avoid an awkward mile of clearance between tire and fender. Basically I had to fab a custom fork crown drop mount L-bracket. While a 650x48 tire could easily fit under the fork crown, the fork is not *quite* wide enough to mount a proper width fender for that tire size. It could be done but you'd have to manipulate the fender around the fork legs. I'd prefer threaded mounts for the crown for the fender and the headlight, like the Salsa Journeyman fork has. It would just be a great experience to work with that, vs the mile-long bolt I have in there now. The takeaway: if you have a Surly Midnight Special and you want to run 650x42mm tires + proper metal fenders, this is your fork. Install with confidence!
