Fyx Tech: Video Overview of the Manitou Mastodon Fat Bike Fork

We recently got our hands on the new Manitou Mastodon fork from our friends over at Hayes and we put together this quick video overview of the product. The Mastodon is a great new option for people looking to add front suspension to their fat bike and we expect to see a lot of these on the trails here in Wisconsin this winter. Cold tested (wink wink) and with plenty of options, we expect to see a ton of Mastodon's going out the door here in our shop in Milwaukee this winter.

Special thanks to Ryan Day from the Hayes Bicycle Group for coming by the shop and giving us all the tech specs and insider knowledge about both the Manitou Mastodon Comp and Mastodon Pro fat bike forks.  We have both the Pro and Comp versions in stock here at our shop in Milwaukee and online by following the above links.

I’m wondering about geometry of the fork and frame between the extended and standard models. Comparing 100 mm extended version to 100 mm standard version, is the axle the same distance away from the steerer tube? In other words, does a 100mm ext keep the same geometry as a 100mm standard Manitou, or does it lengthen the fork to have a similar geometry to a 120mm standard Manitou?

I don’t want to come across as a know-it-all, but if I understood your Manitou “expert” correctly, his implication that you can adjust the Mastodon’s travel via the IVA is dead wrong. The arrangement of spacer clips on the IVA assembly tunes the air chamber volume. You need to disassemble the fork and change the spacer clip stack on the compression damper to adjust the travel.

IVA is a great tuning mechanism, NOT a travel adjuster.
