Fat Bike Hub Driver
Shimano HG
Fits Shimano 8–11 speed MTB cassettes. This is the most common freehub standard and works with most Shimano and SRAM mountain cassettes, except XD-only cassettes.
SRAM XD
Fits SRAM 11 and 12-speed XD cassettes. Required for cassettes with a 10-tooth small cog and offers a wider gear range. Not compatible with Shimano HG cassettes.
Shimano Micro Spline (MS)
Fits Shimano 12-speed MTB cassettes. Shimano’s 12-speed standard, designed to support a 10-tooth small cog while maintaining strength and durability.
Fat Bike Hub Spacing
Fat bike hubs use wider spacing to clear large tires and frames. Hub sizing describes the axle type and the frame or fork spacing.
Front Hub Spacing
135QR -Uses a 9mm quick release axle with 135mm fork spacing. Common on older fat bikes.
150QR - Uses a 9mm quick release axle with 150mm fork spacing.
15×150mm Thru Axle - Uses a 15mm thru axle with 150mm fork spacing. Stiffer and more secure than quick release.
Rear Hub Spacing
170QR - Uses a 10mm quick release axle with 170mm rear frame spacing. Found on some older fat bikes.
12×197mm Thru Axle - Uses a 12mm thru axle with 197mm rear frame spacing. This is the modern fat bike standard.
How to Read Hub Sizing
Quick Release (QR) hubs use a 9mm or 10mm axle that clamps into open dropouts.
Thru Axle hubs use a solid axle that passes through the frame or fork and threads in.
In a size like 12×197mm:
• 12mm = axle diameter
• 197mm = rear frame spacing
In a size like 150QR:
• QR = 9mm quick release axle
• 150mm = fork spacing
Laced with Hope Fatsno hubs and Sun-Ringle Duroc rims, this build is for turning your fat bike into a rowdy warm-season trail rig once the snow melts. Pair it with narrower plus tires and the bike comes alive—faster to spin up, easier to lean over, and way more at home on dry singletrack and flow trails. It cuts weight where it matters, sharpens the handling, and lets one bike pull double duty without feeling like a compromise. Tubeless is straightforward and the build is tough enough for real trail abuse, made for riders who swap wheelsets with the seasons and keep riding.
