More From Terrene

Gliding over a frozen lake or twisting through a groomed trail—winter riding is best enjoyed with a quick and capable tire that won’t drag you down and still rail through turns.

Inspired by studless winter vehicle snow tires, Cake Eater was designed to have lower center tread height with deep siping for lower rolling resistance while the side lugs remained tall and edgy for biting into soft corners. Studs pockets were added in the transition areas for optional added cornering confidence in icy conditions.

Cake Eater is our fully studdable fast rolling fat tire for long days on the trail and is available in 26×4.0, 26×4.6 and 27.5×4.0.

Great on packed snow, serviceable on ice...that's about it.

I've been on these all winter in Northern Michigan through a lot of different conditions. Set up tubeless easily on Surly MOBD rims. Rolls FAST. Or should I say rolls FAST on perfectly groomed or well packed trail. Awesome on trails that have even had a little bit of freeze/thaw and no fresh. Not solid ice, but super firm snow. Very fun in those conditions. Did not like them at all in more than a couple inches of fresh snow. Forward grip was manageable, braked ok, but just wandered all over the place. No amount of fiddling with pressure seemed to solve that for me. Would go back to Bud/Lou combo for fresh if I hadn't stupidly sold that wheelset. Now that spring is around the corner and the sun is out every day but still cold at night we've got lots of Ice on trails. Like solid ice, so ask yourself "do I ever want to lean the bike or do my trails have the potential for iced off camber sections?" No outside studs, can't lean it much. Thankfully the most of the snow berms haven't melted yet and are still just soft enough for some bite. My cornering technique has become slap the snow berm and hope to ride it out. Leaning the bike just won't work. Off camber...well, I've still got a bruised hip from when my weight shifted a bit too much to the unstudded outer lugs. Basically ice grip was sufficient to ride trails that are ice, trails that would be unrideable without studs, but they don't let me ride how I really want to without bigger studs on the outer lugs. If I didn't do most of my riding next to a well groomed trail network I would not ride these.

Terrence Cake Eater 27.5 X 4.0 studded tires

These are excellent tires. Put them on my 2017 Trek Farley EX 9.8. Very hard to find a studded tire for this wheel size so was excitied to find these. They set up tubeless very easy and we're surprisingly light for a studded tire. Took them out on the trails and the conditions were light hard pack snow with scattered ice sections and traction was amazing. Hooked up on all corners and did not wash out and climbed rocks and log skinnies with ease. Had them inflated to 10-12 psi and they did not roll off the rims. Will set the psi lower for deeper snow and see what happens.
